10 Video Games You Didn't Realise Were VERY Successful

9. Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe

Fans were elated when Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe was announced. Having Scorpion fighting Batman or Liu Kang squaring off against the Joker sounded like a dream come true.

But because a lot of DC Comics are geared towards kids, the crossover had to drastically tone down the violence which Mortal Kombat is known for. After all, it couldn't depict Sub-Zero ripping out Wonder Woman's spine or Superman executing his opponents with his laser eyes, could it?

Naturally, gamers were up in arms. Bloodshed is the bread and butter of the franchise. Mortal Kombat without gore is like Mario without jumping or an EA title without the disappointment.

Considering Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe was the last game Midway released before filing for bankruptcy, many assumed this stinker bombed spectacularly.

However, MKVSDCU sold over two million units, and was the most pre-ordered MK game ever at the time. According to GameStop, this fighting title made up 55% of the company's sales during the first week of its release. According to Renthrak, it was one of the most popular Xbox 360 games in 2009 to rent.

Midway didn't go bankrupt because of Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, but in spite of it. It went bust literally the same week this crossover was released, so it had no baring on the company staying afloat.
