10 Video Games You Should Be Playing Right Now (October 2015)

2. Undertale

Why? To see what all the fuss is about. Undertale became one of the highest rated PC games of all time almost overnight, netting a solid 94 on Metacritic from every critic across the board. That's the same as Mass Effect 2 and above Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Interested yet? Created by one-man coding powerhouse Toby Fox, Undertale is top-down 2D RPG that's definitely going to put people off with its old-school graphics, but the immediate question remains; is it really that good? Well, in a word - yes, but you'll need to play it for yourself to get a handle on where you sit on it being regarded as a masterpiece. Story-wise you're a small child thrown into an underground world of monsters - except all is not what it seems when your realise they've created quite the human-fearing society down there, and your presence in the realm leads to all sorts of moral quandaries and friendships to be made. What makes Undertale stand out is its humour, a supremely unique combat system (you can fight or simply talk to everyone you come across) and above all, how it slowly starts interacting with you along the way, occasionally without you noticing. The fourth wall-breaks and commentaries on how we play games, how we even control them or just the notion of exploration in a digital world is some really brilliant, memorable stuff - especially when you realise you can start over and many things will be different all over again. To say more would be to spoil the fun, but sufficed to say, Undertale is a totally unique gem of an experience, with some fantastic characters, a wicked sense of humour and a phenomenal score underpinning the whole thing. Check it out.
