10 Videos Games That Totally Trolled Players

7. Mortal Kombat II - Kano Transformations

Mk 2
Midway

The Mortal Kombat series set new standards for not just introducing secrets, but trolling with them. In original arcade version of the first game, the diagnostic menu included an item called "ERMACS," which was short for "error macros." When a revision of the game added the hidden character Reptile, a listing for "Reptile appearances" was added. This meant that when journalists and hardcore fans checked out the menu, they started to think that "Ermac" was another secret character.

Ermac wasn't a character, but the excitement over the confusion got the staff at Midway thinking. Not only did they add more hidden characters in Mortal Kombat II, but they planted nonsense in the diagnostic menus behind the scenes. Right underneath the listings of how many times the hidden characters showed up was a counter for "Kano Transformations."

Kano was one of the most popular characters in the first game, and he was one of two (along with Sonya Blade) that didn't make it into the sequel. Speculation ran rampant that you could enter a special code to use Shang Tsung to turn into Kano, but it was just that: Speculation.

Kano and Sonya Blade were only in the game as prisoners chained up in the background of a single level, and the cryptic menu text was to keep everyone playing the game in arcades.
