10 Violent Video Game Moments That Were Incredibly Satisfying
10. Your First Chainsaw Kill - Gears Of War
In something slightly similar to how Metal Gear Solid first established its appeal in hiding from enemies, Gears saw the state of third person shooters and showed a similar sign of restraint; what if you had to take cover when engaging enemies? It was such a genius little touch every developer worth their steroid-sprinkled salt suitably kicked themselves, as other than forgotten gem Killswitch, this approach to combat had never been done before, and especially not to this level. Epic showed you could still have your big set-piece moments, but you'd have to work for them, and one such thing was the utilisation of your chainsaw-mounted rifle, the introduction of which to an enemy's chest cavity remains one of the most fun gameplay mechanics in any action franchise. The fact you can raise the chainsaw and rev it like Christian Bale's American Psycho was just icing on the cake too, because as soon as blade touched body your controller vibrated like it was about to explode and protagonist Marcus Fenix - already a man who looks like he could tear someone apart with his little fingers - roars a powerful, passionate bellow as the screen gets covered in chunks of alien life-juice. In short, if Epic can ever think of anything as viciously enjoyable as this again, we couldn't throw our cash at them fast enough.
