Game Studio: Firespirite

While Firespirite is technically a young studio, the pedigree of the talent it's made up of, namely, key members of Sony Liverpool/Psygnosis...are anything but inexperienced.

That landmark studio was founded in 1984, and has had a hand at publishing and developing championed titles such as Lemmings, Destruction Derby, Shadow of the Beast, and the Wipeout series.

Sadly, returns began to decline and Sony closed them in 2012. They quickly reformed as Firespirite the same year, but things have been underwhelming for almost a decade.

They offered minor support on the PS4 tech demo The Playroom, created the vanilla Vita title Run Sackboy Run!, and made the forgettable PSVR game Air Force Special Ops: Nightfall. It was work that paid the bills but was pretty uninspired.

Then, after several years of work, they dropped The Persistence, a tough and tense Rogue-like sci-fi horror, with a cracking premise: players navigate a space ship overrun by terrifying creatures, with levels becoming randomized if you die.

It's challenging, exhilarating and a one-of-a-kind VR experience that has pleased critics and earned a cult following amongst gamers.
