10 War Video Games You Must Play Before You Die
9. Valiant Hearts: The Great War
Ubisoft Montpelier's Valiant Hearts: The Great War couldn't be much more different of a war game than Medal of Honour - a third-person puzzle-adventure game as it is.
Set during the First World War, Valiant Hearts casts the player as four separate characters simply trying to survive, and over its short 5-ish-hour playtime finds a beguiling grey area between cutesy indie and harrowing historical document.
Indeed, the game's cartoonish visual style belies its enormous emotional intelligence and reverence for its characters: this is a complex and at times devastating story, albeit one peppered with hope and reverberating humanity throughout.
The gameplay certainly isn't particularly tough or complex, but in focusing less on shootouts and overblown set-pieces, it foregrounds the true spiritual cost of war.
