10 War Video Games You Must Play Before You Die
8. Brothers In Arms: Road To Hill 30
While its claims to "realism" aren't all too well-aged today, back in 2005 Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 was absolutely the most gritty and authentic military FPS on the market.
The clearly Band of Brothers-inspired WWII shooter eschews relentless, huge-scale skirmishes in favour of smaller, more confined encounters, starring a cast of well-drawn characters no less.
This, combined with the player's ability to administer a comprehensive set of commands to said teammates makes this an uncommonly intimate entry into the genre.
Perhaps the most distinctive element of the entire game, however, is its unique approach to aiming: landing a successful shot on a target requires considerable patience due to its intentional floatiness.
Though this may frustrate those reared on the unrealistic aiming stability present in most war shooters, it does further ensure Brothers in Arms is a singular effort like no other.
While it might seem a bit quaint by contemporary standards - particularly with regard to its over-egged voice acting - there's a purity to the game's restraint, offering up a more down-to-Earth, grounded take on WWII.
