The flip-side to knowing anything "can be fixed later" means way, way more games get shipped or slapped with price tags, before actually being finished.
Many developers of yesteryear would be horrified (or overjoyed, as it means they don't have to work all night) if they got eyes on the states that pass as "retail worthy" today.
Granted, 2014 was the absolute worst of this, with Assassin's Creed Unity releasing in a markedly terrible, unplayable conditions. Since then we've seen companies remember their duty to consumers when taking such large chunks of cash, but things like Mass Effect Andromeda, Ghost Recon: Wildlands and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds all released in less-than-ideal states, taking months to course-correct or reach a build that generations' past would've mandated.
