10 Ways The Steam Box Can Win The Console War

3. Steam Box Will Support Indies More

steam-greenlight One good thing to say about this upcoming generation of consoles-- as well as the current one -- is the embracing of indies. In the past, many people would have to fight in the coliseum known as college for a chance to join a game company. But the indie developer has found a way to get around the tedious enrollment procedures by going into soul trading. Hence the term "indie." In an independent workspace, indie developers are more likely to think outside the box than mainstream developers when producing their games. Thanks to this, indie titles are among the most ground breaking on the market, and would catch the attention of mobile companies, the big three console companies and their impeding fourth wheel, Valve. However, what separates Valve from the rest is that the company has gone the extra mile in supporting the growing indie game industry through a service called Steam Greenlight. This component of the Steam service utilizes the power of the built-in community -- another component of Steam -- to promote the inclusions of indie titles to the library. Simply put, indie developers can promote their work to users who will in turn vote on having them released through Steam. It's a cost-effective way to get indie titles on the market. Although other companies will surely follow suit with this idea, the fact that Valve came up with it first, and that its already a part of Steam gives the Steam Box a somewhat monopolistic advantage over the big three. Indie titles on Steam Box maybe the best console for the indie game industry.
