The storied history of console wars dates back to heated discussions on internet forums since, well, the internet began. If it wasn't the Fairchild Channel F vs the Atari 2600 or the SNES vs Sega Genesis it was XBOX vs PlayStation, and in the decades-long battles for market domination we often neglect the other options for video game consumption.
Choosing a system to play games so often feels like a binary choice, with Nintendo's offerings being seen more as a complimentary piece to sit alongside the XBOX or PlayStation in the home entertainment centre.
You could, of course, forgo the decision entirely and opt for PC gaming, but having more choice is never a bad thing, so why is every new console that hits the market immediately seen as a dud?
From Ouya to Stadia, penetrating the console market is either devilishly difficult to pull off, or it's simply a matter of no company since Microsoft being able to enter the arena and do a competent job of it.
