10 Ways Video Games Keep Lying To You
1. Announcing Games Way Too Early
This one has been happening more and more lately - a company will announce a game to hype fans, even though that game is just entering development.
This practice usually goes one of two ways:
In the case of the Elder Scrolls VI, that the game would eventually come out was never in question. It's a hugely successful franchise, Skyrim continues to perform well ten years after its original release - a new entry in the TES series was a foregone conclusion. So for Bethesda to announce that TESVI was beginning production - a process that will take years - simply as weak mea culpa for Fallout 76's troubled launch was just a needless tease.
On the other side of things, the poster child for this particular lie: Beyond Good And Evil 2. Announced first all the way back in 2008, the game is approaching Duke Nukem Forever-levels of uncertainty.
Since that original trailer, Ubisoft has never officially cancelled the game. For over ten years now they've insisted it's still in active development, leading to a full gameplay trailer in 2019, followed by an almost immediate return to total radio silence.
If I didn't know better, I'd say Ubisoft is trolling us.
