10 Weirdest Excuses For Video Game Bosses
8. John Romero - DOOM II
Who could have known that the co-creator of DOOM was in fact manifesting within Evil Incarnate? Then again, it’s not the first time a developer turned out to be evil.
The final boss of DOOM II: Hell on Earth is a gigantic demon head called the Icon of Sin. It’ll launch rockets out of its lava-filled cranium, meaning the only way to kill it is to pump it full of rockets through that very same fleshy opening.
In fact, the big bad boss is just a flat wall with some textures made to look like a monster smashing through. Past the lava in the skull is a small tunnel with the true boss of the game: John Romero’s smug head on a stick.
The rockets’ explosions splash-damage Romero. After a certain amount of damage, multiple explosions appear in front of the Icon’s face, and the game ends.
His inclusion was a prank by the other developers, which Romero found out and loved it so much, he even helped record an ominous message in reverse for when the player comes face to face with the final boss: “To win the game, you must defeat me, John Romero.”
And then a kerjillion demons spawn shortly afterwards. Let’s face it, we’ve all wasted our time initially just trying to kill the endless onslaught of monsters, right?
