10 Worst Areas In Dark Souls
8. The Gutter
Not for the last time in this list, we come across a common complaint with some levels in the series. Darkness.
There is a difference between having a dingy aesthetic or creating a mood and having a lack of light that hinders gameplay and ruins enjoyment.
The Gutter in Dark Souls 2 is one of the worst offenders. Unless you already know the layout off by heart, taking a torch is a requirement. Even if you are relatively confident, it is still advisable due to awkward enemy locations, many places where you can drop to your death and a very confusing layout.
The torch mechanic was specific to the second game and you could (theoretically) find yourself in this area with no "torch time" left and have to go through blind. Having it in your off-hand meant that any players that were used to two-handing weapons or fought with something in each were additionally hamstrung.
The bonfire locations aren't the most obvious either and it was very possible to miss that all-important check point that saved you from starting again from scratch. While there is no denying that they created an atmosphere here, pure frustration is probably not what they were going for.
