10 Worst Controller Designs Ever

6. Original Xbox Controller (2001)

The Offender: Microsoft The Console: Xbox Worst Component: The gigantic, colossal, huge, pie-like size of the thing. Redeeming Feature: The best thumb sticks available at the time. Microsoft's first venture into the console market, the Xbox had a lot of hype, and a lot of pressure to succeed behind it. Dominated at the time by Nintendo, Sony and Sega, the original Xbox entered the console market as an underdog, despite Microsoft's status in the computing industry. Therefore, the last thing the Xbox needed was a controller that everyone was openly laughing at. In retrospect, the original Xbox controller wasn't all that bad, it's just that it eeked of clunkiness, a fact not helped by the similarly large size of the console itself. Nicknamed the Fatty, it was on the receiving end of several "industry worst" awards in 2001. Thankfully, Microsoft were able to take on board the harsh criticism, releasing the much more comfortable (and smaller) 'Controller S' as the standard Xbox controller by 2001.
