10 Worst Mistakes Ever Made By Video Game Companies
8. Interplay Making A PS2 Game Instead Of Fallout 3
It may seem impossible to think of now, but there was a time when the Fallout franchise looked to be well and truly in the Styx - like 'trying to survive in a nuclear wasteland immediately after the bombs dropped' screwed.
Former Fallout publishers Interplay were keen to dive into the growing console market and use the Fallout brand to do it, even if that meant making a game completely at odds with the spirit of the series. Several years earlier, they tried making a PS1 top-down shooter set in the Fallout universe, which was quickly canned, and with the popular PS2 now around, they were determined to try again.
Eventually, Interplay abandoned development of Fallout 3, which was already at an advanced stage, and focused all its attention on Brotherhood of Steel, the forgettable top-down shooter for the PS2. The reception was lukewarm, and the studio eventually got into such financial trouble that it had to sell off the franchise to Bethesda, just to stay afloat.
Interplay all but faded to obscurity, but we gamers won, as Fallout is now one of the biggest game franchises on the planet.
