Add-ons for games consoles - they just don't really work, do they? Every time a console has tried to increase its power by some (usually) CD-based appurtenance, the gaming public has shrugged it off, presumably with the mindset that if they're going to upgrade their console, they may as well do it properly and wait until the new generation.

The Sega Genesis was right on the frontline of dubious add-on experiments in the forms of the Mega CD, and later the Sega 32X. On a technical level, both add-ons were deemed powerful and worthwhile upgrades, but developers never really jumped onboard.

The Sega CD became widely associated with trashy FMV movies that felt like you were playing a part in a daytime soap opera, while the 32X, well, hardly had any games to speak of.

These were the first of many slip-ups for Sega as a console manufacturer, and played a direct part in the company's next commercial blunder...
