10 Worst Mistakes Ever Made By Video Game Companies
6. Unveiling Of The Xbox One
Looking back on it, console launches have almost always been a bit of a squib - cheesy, PR-saturated affairs that almost seem to be testing what the public won't like, rather than what it will for a new home console.
But even though the bar is relatively low, the unveiling of the Xbox One back in 2013 manages to be in a league of its own for sheer, blundering failure. While people were expecting a showcase of the games and gaming prowess of the console, the focus of the press conference was almost entirely on its TV capabilities - how quickly the TV feature turns on, watching TV with a friend over Skype, getting sports score updates while watching TV, you name it. It was presented as a veritable high-tech cable box.
Then there was the DRM omnishambles, which essentially forced people wanting to share their games to have the recipient turn on their Xbox One every 24 hours to avoid losing access to them, as well as presenting the Kinect as a kind of 'always listening' Big Brother eye.
Microsoft ended up backtracking on all of these plans, but the damage was done, and as of this moment the Xbox One is being outsold by the PS4 by just about 2 to 1.
