10 Worst Opening Levels That Almost Ruined Great Video Games

RPGs have always struggled when it comes to introducing players to the world, with a strange tendency to avoid exposing us to the colourful characters, scenery and skill-development systems available to you, confining us to claustrophobic corridors, dungeons or sewers instead.

KOTOR 2 is a case in point, as the first level takes place at a mining facility made up of monotonous pale blue corridors. There's almost nothing of the character-building or diverse dialogue options to be found here, and instead of imbuing us with a sense of forward-progression, you're forced to go back and forth all the time like some intern constantly doing coffee runs for his superiors.

For a game that's regarded as a pioneer in the RPG genre, offering a fantastic story that's faithful to the Star Wars universe, great gameplay (for the time), and excellent writing by the Obsidian team, the Mining Facility is painfully bereft of all those traits, making a terrible first impression.

It's such an unpopular level, in fact, that you can even download a 'Skip Peragus' mod that lets you avoid it altogether, though you may miss out on a few crucial nuggets of story that way.
