10 Worst Opening Levels That Almost Ruined Great Video Games

3. Temple Of Trials - Fallout 2

Here we go again with the dodgy RPG opening levels. Fallout 2's Temple of Trials is completely at odds with its own ethos of letting you create a character and interact with the world in a way of your choosing. The Temple of Trials is not only a bleak and extremely unimaginative way to frame a tutorial, as you essentially bump into a guard who essentially says 'I won't let you do anything until you pass the test in the Temple of Trials ', but also screws you over unless you happen to have created a character with the specific skills that will help get you through it.

See, the Temple of Trials doesn't care what type of character you created, and unlike the rest of the game, it doesn't let you choose how you approach obstacles. It just puts a spear in your hand, and says, 'Now go and skewer some giant ants', whether or not your character's even a melee build. If you're not aware of this and pick the wrong starting stats for your character, then you could find yourself stuck down there for a very long time.

If you do manage to stumble through all the ants, traps and locks to pick (or doors to blow up), your final challenge is to face a bruising man, who you have to either fight (in which case you'll probably die), or convince that maybe a fight isn't the way to go,which you'll need high Intelligence to do.

One of the most punishing tutorials in game history...
