10 WORST Things About Popular Video Game Genres
2. Other Players - MMOs
Despite the valiant efforts of many to desperately restore the reputation of MMO players, there's an overwhelming consensus that the genre is plagued by somewhat disagreeable fanbases.
Letting a smorgasbord of colourful characters loose in a gigantic open world is a recipe for disaster. Much like social media, MMO servers are occupied by dozens upon dozens of people across the globe, and from all walks of life. A little bit of everything, all of the time wields predictable results: that there'll be more than a few bad or annoying eggs among the bunch.
Fruity language in party play is a common occurrence, so many of us navigate to the mute button to get away from the madness.
The Massive Multiplayer Online genre often finds comfort in fantasy settings or within worlds thick with lore, so tinny mic inputs, unpunctual party members and half-witted healers causing the dungeon to be restarted all detract from the colossal potential for escapism that the genre holds.
Make no mistake, player interaction is an essential component of the genre, without it any MMORPG would simply by an RPG. The drawback is that online games aren't exempt from the flaws of humanity.
Predictable, if disappointing.
