10 Worst Things Gaming Did In 2024

5. Game Informer Shuts Down

Sadly, print journalism has steadily been declining for over a decade, so perhaps the writing was on the wall that Game Informer would be discontinued sooner rather than later.

Nevertheless, the formal suspension of it (by GameStop) in August of 2024 was deservedly met with widespread outcry and mourning from readers, writers, developers, publishers, and basically everyone else involved in gaming.

After all, Game Informer was one of the most trusted, distinctive, popular, and long-running industry magazines, having begun in 1991 and published over 360 issues.

What’s more – and according to multiple staff members – the news came during an impromptu meeting (so they were given no warning of the impending situation). At the time, content director Kyle Hilliard shared – via X – that the editorial team was even “about 70% done with the next issue” (which would’ve had “a GREAT cover”).

The official Game Informer website was shut down, too, leaving only the magazine’s farewell letter as the home page. Additionally (if understandably), the magazine’s Facebook, X, YouTube, and Instagram accounts haven’t been updated since then, either.

Fortunately, though, there have been numerous people fighting to preserve Game Informer’s legacy by archiving full PDFs of the print issues (among other methods).
