5. Breastfeeding Zombie - Resident Evil 4
The French trailer for Resident Evil 4 begins with a mother sitting on her bed cradling a newborn. As the baby nestles into her, you feel overwhelmed by a sense of comfort and warmth. But after a few seconds, the clip pulls the rug out from under the viewers, revealing the woman is a zombie.
As a concept, this teaser should work since it uses misdirection until the closing moments to emphasise the fear factor.
But the woman isn't just holding the baby - she's breastfeeding him.
But why? The idea of a zombie with an infant in its arms is already unnerving. Why did the commercial have to include multiple shots of a baby sucking on the zombie's nipple? Of the thousands of angles the advertising team could have possible gone for, why did they think THIS one would entice gamers?
Although the commercial has the decency to show Resident Evil 4 in action after this reveal, even the biggest fans will be too shocked by what they just witnessed for the gameplay to have much of an impact.
It's ironic how a masterpiece like RE4 happens to have among the worst adverts in gaming.
