100 Things You Never Knew About Resident Evil
89. The Legitimate Randomiser
Resident Evil 2 on Nintendo 64 shows up in a lot of lists of interesting video game ports for good reason.
First of all, it's impressive that the team behind the port managed to fit the PS1 game (the FMVs of which were so big for the time that the game necessitated two discs) onto a 500MB cartridge. Sure, the game looks and sounds more than a little rough around the edges because of it, but it's still a testament to what was possible at the time.
But more than this the game contains a few unique elements - a series of files that are exclusive to this version, a blood colour change option and, for the only time in series history, a legitimate randomiser.
This randomiser swaps around some of the more incidental pick-ups like herbs and ammo (and randomises the amounts) rather than messes with key items but considering that players can typically only experience these kinds of randomiser challenges in Resi thanks to modders, it makes the N64 version quite special indeed.
