There's a reason that some of the most popular mobile games (apart from Flappy Bird) are isometrically-viewed resource management sims where you're juggling the needs of many whilst trying to amass a suitable empire of assets. The Simpsons: Tapped Out did it, The Smurfs Village did it, and generation-definer Clash of Clans is still doing it. Aside from Sim City though, where did this template start out? Well, the most popular response to the question that inspired this very article was none-other than the original top-down click-a-thon Civilization; a game who's core formula has been polished to a mirror sheen with the Complete Edition of 2010's Civilization V. As one of the founding fathers of real-time strategy, Civilization paved the way for overcrowded on-screen elements such as multiple meters, counters and statistics firing off in all directions - although only those who have really gotten stuck into the series will know their bombers from their democratic ostrich's.
