3. Luigi Wasn't A Playable Character In Super Mario 64

This is a rumour that spread like wildfire back in the 90s and it wasn't helped by Nintendo, who kept quiet and let fans' imaginations go crazy. All kinds of apparent 'clues' pointed to Luigi being a secret, playable character in the game that could only be obtained by doing ridiculous things such as running around fountains, jumping into cannons or nailing impossible button sequences. The hunt for Luigi felt like the world's biggest treasure hunt and you were a part of it. One theory centred on some hidden symbols which apparently read "L is Real 2041" and when Nintendo were asked about their meaning, they refused to comment. They were actually just random shapes, but the hype train went into overdrive and although the company eventually set fans straight, it was too late and the legend had begun. To this day, some still believe Luigi is hidden in the game code, but it's safe to say it was a lie.
