9. VR Headsets Are Something "You Really Must Try"... But Never Will
2016 will see the first solid commercial rollout of VR headsets in the industry, with Sony's PlayStation VR going up against Facebook's Oculus Rift, Valve's Vive - and most likely a few others. However, although the reports have come back exceedingly strong in a Morpheus-like "You have to see it for yourself" kinda way, that's entirely the problem. The asking price is around $300, which is comparable to an entire new console, and although so far Sony have been getting behind the kit with some exclusive games - Tim Schafer is bringing Psychonauts over, for one - there's not going to be any way to demo them unless you're either in-store or at a friend's house. Add to the cost and strange feel of the entire marketing spin on these things as some warp-gate between reality and digital, and you've got thousands of us thinking it's going to end up like the motion-controlled debacle that was the late 2000s. In the last generation, Nintendo nailed motion controls as their competitors floundered, but for VR? A good chunk of your paycheck isn't the best amount to be gambling with, especially when all the health risks of being constantly immersed in a game are yet to be seen.
