It took less than a decade for Minecraft to become the most successful video game of all time. Mojang's blocky sandbox title has managed to stay on top, due to its accessibility and addictive gameplay.

But there's no way Minecraft could've been popular for this long without generating at least one creepy story.

Speaking of which, let's look at the game's scariest character. Not enderman. Not creeper. Minecraft's true boogeyman is Herobrine.

To hardcore fans, Herobrine is the stuff of legends since there've been hints of his existence since the game's pre-release, when images of him circulated on gaming forums. In these pictures, Herobrine resembles the default Steve character with fully whitened eyes.

It was rumoured that if you see random objects manifest into being in a single-player world, you know Herobrine is near. The few who allegedly spotted him said they only saw the mysterious spectre for a second before he vanished.

However, all the gamers who claimed to have encountered Herobrine are more commonly known as "liars", since the character never existed.

Even though this legend should've died down by now, there's always some Minecraft gamer with an overactive imagination who swears they bumped into Herobrine upon their last playthrough.
