11 Hugely-Anticipated Video Games You Won't Believe Got Cancelled

11. Aliens: Crucible

In one of the biggest blunders this side of Sonic making out with a princess, Sega once had a very unique RPG in their arsenal, only to cancel it and release the remarkably buggy glitch-fest that is Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Crucible was to be developed by RPG-masters Obsidian - who you'll either know from this year's South Park game, Fallout: New Vegas, or the spies n' stats RPG Alpha Protocol - meaning it was pretty much a dead cert, and from the footage it appeared to be very much in the vein of Mass Effect when it comes to combat and character progression. Sure everything here appears to be fairly early on (check out that floating alien a couple of minutes in), but considering Obsidian's pedigree it's clear that all the elements were in place to create something special.

With stat-trees and character-customisation it appeared to finally put us in the shoes of a variety of crew members, all desperately trying to survive against a Xenomorph onslaught. The nearest comparison outside of Mass Effect in terms of visuals and atmosphere seems to be horror tie-in The Thing from 2002 - like in that game we can just imagine forming a solid bond with a teammate, building trust through hours of dialogue only for them to be ripped apart when you least expect it.

Considering the outright hatred thousands of Aliens fans now have towards Colonial Marines - due to a plethora of reasons from false advertising to shockingly terrible gameplay - it's completely baffling that Crucible not only got the shaft, but continues to be unreleased despite its established state.
