11 Major Rivalries That Changed Video Game History
9. Activision Vs. EA
The face-off: Call Of Duty or Battlefield? One of the most recent rivalries that's currently still ongoing, Activision's Call of Duty series has become the buzzword for your average mainstream-game-hating player, whilst Battlefield so far has managed to not outstay its welcome - although upcoming "It's not DLC, honest!" Hardline could tip the scales too far in COD's favour once again. Behind the scenes there's been shots fired too, with EA (the chaps backing Battlefield) CEO John Riccotello once saying he wants COD to "rot from the core" due to how close the two franchises are in their main demographic, gameplay and overall appeal. Although Activision's response on the matter was that such words are "bad for the industry", if anything it helps to rally the fanboys behind a public figure that also shares in their hatred of the opposition. Riccotello does have a point though, as the two do share very much the same appeal - even going so far as to have almost the same button layout. And although the wrath of a thousand furious fanboys will surely descend on the comments by saying this; aside from the open-world nature of Battlefield, there's not a whole lot else separating the two either. So far Call of Duty remains the go-to franchise purely because Battlefield's 3 and 4 have been hot glitch-filled messes, but objectively it seems it still has more to offer the military shooter-lover, it just needs to release a game that doesn't randomly eat your save every couple of months.
