Considering how inconsistent the Sonic franchise has been for, well, ages, there wasn't much chatter or excitement about the hedgehog's latest outing outside of the hardcore fanbase, allowing this arguably classic title to totally sneak up on fanatical and casual Sonic lovers alike.

Sonic Mania feels like the most faithful and complete Sonic sequel in many, many years, perfectly replicating the style of the original 8-bit games while also introducing some nifty new mechanics to boot.

Half an homage to the classic earlier games and half an evolution of what they got so right, it's just the nostalgic blast fans have been craving, but also proves there's plenty of life left in the franchise yet.

Easily the best Sonic game since his glory days on the Mega Drive, you'd be insane to give this a miss if you have even the most passing interest in the earlier titles.
