11 Most Surprisingly Awesome Video Games Of 2017 (So Far)

3. Late Shift

Late Shift
Wales Interactive Ltd.

Wales Interactive's Late Shift had quite a few things working against it right out of the gate. For starters, it's an FMV game, and secondly, it started out as a mobile phone app. Not exactly the best track record for a great game, right?

Well, Late Shift is an exception that proves the rule, an absurdly entertaining cinematic adventure revolving around a heist that takes place over one very crazy night.

The player is tasked with making choices which steer the story in one of many directions, and though the FMV genre has a well-earned stigma from its boom period back in the 80s and 90s, this honestly might be the best-ever entry into the genre.

With slick production values that belong on the big screen, solid acting, an engrossing narrative and a surprising fluidity of content, there isn't a false illusion of choice here as in, say, many of the Telltale games.

No, the story can splinter off in many totally different directions depending upon your decisions, and it's all seamlessly sewn together without any stuttering or moments for pause.

Moreover, it's a great game to play with a few pals in your living room, drawing a quick straw poll for every choice and watching how it all plays out, preferably with a big tub of popcorn.

Don't sleep on this one: it's got cult classic written all over it and costs less than a cinema ticket.
