11 Most Notorious Gaming Sequel Set-Ups That Never Followed Through

1. Half-Life: Episode Two - Eli Vance Dies

Shenmue II's cliffhanger is a tough one to beat, but the #1 spot has to go to Half-Life: Episode Two, largely because it makes considerably more sense than Shenmue II's ending, and completely shakes up the story. The game ends as Alyx's father Eli is killed by a Combine Advisor, and Alyx, who was just rescued from the same fate herself, clutching her father's body. True to Valve's minimalist approach, they don't linger on it too long, and we fade to black on a deathly bleak final shot. That was 6 and a half years ago, and we're still waiting for Episode Three, or as is far more likely now, Half-Life 3 itself. Every few months news will emerge about some joker registering a Half-Life trademark that gets everyone excited, or Gabe Newell will make an off-hand comment that we all read far too much into, but that's sadly the extent of our Gordon Freeman-related news these days. There is too much money to be made not to make a new Half-Life game, but just don't expect it anytime soon, and there's no guarantee that we will still care by the time it actually comes out. Are there any epic, unfulfilled sequel teases we missed? Let us know in the comments!
