11 Offensive Video Game Moments You Need To See For Yourself
2. Tomb Raider's 'Rape Scene'
Another case of the internet and world's media blowing something out of proportion (although in fairness, this did originate with a spark, rather than nothing at all).
So basically, in the promotion of 2013's rebooted Lara Croft, producer Ron Rosenberg referred to a scene where a male enemy stands dominantly over Lara as that of a "sexual assault", where Lara is forced to fight back and kill to survive.
This was categorically not true, and was stated as much by Crystal Dynamics' Darrell Gallagher, who later clarified While there is a threatening undertone in the sequence and surrounding drama, it never goes any further than the scenes that we have already shown publicly. Sexual assault of any kind is categorically not a theme that we cover in this game."
You can check the scene for yourself below - it really is a case of Rosenberg inferring an intention that wasn't there, giving all the ammunition necessary for many early impressions of this Tomb Raider to discuss a 'rape scene' as being included.
Note: The title and thumbnail of this clip are very misleading - you can see how easily the scene's intent can be skewed.
