11 Powerful Video Game Opening Sequences That Gave You Chills
8. Scaling Mount Olympus - God Of War 3
God of War and Kratos' 'violence beats all' sensibilities may age worse than a banana in the sun, but there's not a game this side of Shadow of the Colossus that nailed everything about the word 'scale', quite like Sony Santa Monica's quadrilogy.
The third instalment in particular just assumed you already knew how to control the angry Spartan's various moves, and set about opening with a string of set-pieces that any other action game would save for a finale. You're to scale Mount Olympus itself, but as the events of the trilogy see all the gargantuan Titans backing you up and taking on the Gods head-on, it makes for all sorts of Godzilla vs. King Kong-esque battles with you but a spec in the middle.
It's testament to how perfected the God of War formula was, that at no point do you feel lost of overwhelmed. Instead, you can just revel in the absurdity of so much overblown carnage, the camera sweeping elegantly in, out and around the various mythical creatures as you're tossed to and fro between them.
With Kratos returning at some point in the future under the now-standard 'soft reboot' mandate, Sony have one hell of a task on their hands if they want to beat the feel and scope of this intro.
