2. When It's JUST Grinding

While playing an RPG, you'll inevitably reach a foe that is literally impossible to defeat with your party's current stats. It doesn't matter what strategy you use. You are simply too weak to win.

In situations like this, you need to grind. Although it's irritating to fight minor enemies over and over to boost your levels, it's necessary to triumph against more formidable rivals.

Even though nobody likes grinding, it's a necessary evil in the role playing genre. If you could just plow through an RPG without grinding, it would pose no challenge.

Knowing you put in the hours of defeating myriads of Goblins, Malboros, and Golems to vanquish mega-baddies like Bahamaut, Emerald Weapon, and Tonberry makes the experience far more rewarding.

Nevertheless, it's still infuriating when the difficulty curve skyrockets, forcing the player to stop everything to grind. A good example of this is when your team face Seymour Flux in Final Fantasy X. This foe is so difficult compared to the enemies you just fought, you have to wander around the area before this encounter for ages until your whole party has shot up by at least ten levels.
