11 Times Video Games Did Horror Better Than Movies

8. Metal Gear Solid - Feeling The Power Of What You're Up Against

Definitely not a horror game, but as we'll see later in this list (and over here) creator Hideo Kojima knows how to create an macabrely directed scene and fill it with an force we immediately felt we'd never be able to beat. Coming at a point in the game where you're still exploring the warehouse facility Solid Snake finds himself in, you're suddenly greeted by an entire corridor of butchered guards, all slain by "some type of blade." Keep in mind so far in the game it'd been a menagerie of fantastically epic dialogue and hiding in cardboard boxes to avoid guards, and this scene was horrifyingly brutal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2VxvJH5A6A#t=321 With a sound cue that appears to be a mix of down-tuned voices all cobbled together like some demonic whispering crowd, you slowly advance down the hall until the very Silent Hill-esque image of another hapless guard being held upright by your foe is revealed. Grey Fox is a total sadistic nutcake whilst you fight him too, and even afterwards he shouts and proclaims he's been 'waiting for this pain' to fight you once again. Story-beats aside, back in 1998 this moment was a slightly-surreal foray into the many different themes and genres Metal Gear would walk between on its journey into gamers' hearts.
