11. Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't - Grand Theft Auto IV

The Ending: At the climax of the game, protagonist Niko is faced with two choices: make a deal with Dimitri, or seek revenge against him. What players decide creates a branching narrative: the deal results in the death of Niko's cousin Roman, and exacting revenge results in the murder of Niko's girlfriend Kate.

How It Trolled Players: Basically, there was no way to have a Mickey Mouse, totally happy ending with everyone you cared about surviving the day. Many players likely assumed that taking the less-materialistic "revenge" option would result in the "good" ending, yet in characteristic Rockstar fashion, they defied expectation and killed the love of Niko's life, leaving him to be forever hassled by his cousin to go bowling. Still, given the ridiculous amount of murder Niko commits over the course of the game, it's a decidedly more realistic ending that someone he cares about dies rather than everyone just walking off into the sunset. Frustrating, perhaps, but it's the right ending for the game in spite of this.
