11 Video Games That Will Define The Current Generation
5. No Man's Sky
Just because a game has helped to define a generation, doesn't necessarily mean the game is good or was well-received.
One of the generation's biggest controversies, No Man's Sky by tiny, Guildford-based developer Hello Games, is a lesson learned by all. No game better encapsulates this generation's dependency on hype - with disastrous consequences.
These days, No Man's Sky is a pretty solid experience. To their credit, Hello Games have devoted their time to reshaping the game into something more palatable. That wasn't the case when the game launched however - it was decreed by many to be a disappointment and worst of all, a lie. Hello Games created an algorithm that, in layman's terms, allowed them to build hundreds of thousands of worlds, each with their own climate, structure and wildlife. It was penned as the ultimate space-faring adventure.
Unfortunately, the game was anything but. It was a dull, restrictive resource-gathering game, with the player constantly hampered by weather damage, running out of fuel and all number of other grievances. Worst of all, almost every planet looked practically the same at its core - a lifeless, barren chunk of rock with a few hills peppered about. At least the soundtrack was cool.
