Liu Gui, sometimes called Liu Gai or Liu Kui, was an officer under Liu Zhang of Yi province; no relation. He was sent to help defend against Liu Bei's invasion of Yi province, alongside Zhang Ren, Zhang Yi, and Wu Yi.

After Wu Yi and Zhang Ren are beaten and captured by Liu Bei's forces it fell upon Liu Gui's shoulders to defend the last bastion of loyalist support in the area. Liu Gui had prepared the city for a siege and took to the ramparts to valiantly defend it. He insulted those who had defected to Liu Bei and started shooting arrows at them. However it was at that moment that his lieutenant, Zhang Yi, stepped up to him and calmly cut him down from behind – opening the gates and turning the city over to Liu Bei.
