12 Abusive Video Game Sequels That Completely Missed The Point

5. Far Cry 2

Far Cry was far from a perfect game, but it got a lot right. For starters, it's still beautiful to look at, and despite the so-so story, it was incredibly immersive running around this tropical setting dropping anything in sight. Ubisoft took over developing duties from Crytek for the massively-anticipated second game in the series, however, and though the game retained its splendid visual style, it also ended up being one of the most boring open-world experiences in gaming history. Basically, doing anything in this game is a huge slog. Traveling between missions and individual objectives takes forever, and guards frequently respawn, which makes for a hugely frustrating experience. In addition, your gun will routinely jam and degrade, and basically, it's as though Ubisoft took Crytek's foundation and then tried to make it too "realistic" (because respawning guards is totally realistic) just to heighten the level of challenge. Most of these gameplay mechanics intended to ramp up the difficulty are just cheap and lazy, rather than presenting challenging missions that are also fun. Thankfully Far Cry 3 redresses this balance considerably, making for a far more enjoyable game that retains those things that did work from both previous games.
