There have been countless debates online regarding which Nier ending is actually canon, given the unique nature in which the various endings are unlocked. The first time you play, you will see Ending A, the second time Ending B, then the third time, you'll be able to choose between C and D. What's clear is that Ending D is like nothing else you've ever seen in a video game climax before. The Alternate Ending: Ending D results in Nier sacrificing himself to save a suffering Kaine, having his presence permanently erased from the mind of anyone who ever knew him, including the player's game save being erased as though it had never happened. As an extra kick, if players start a new game, they won't be able to use the name they previously assigned to the Nier character. Why It's Awesome: It's such a genius way to depict an ultimate sacrifice to the player, to make the gravity of the choice apparent in a more meaningful and unexpected form. Brilliant.
