8. Vegnagun Destroys Spira - Final Fantasy X-2

The Actual Ending: Though there are numerous variations on the ending of FFX-2, the most important thread is that Spira is saved by defeating Vegnagun in the game's final boss battle. If the player achieves 100% completion, they can unlock an additional ending scene in which Yuna and Tidus are reunited in Zanarkand.

The Alternate Ending: The dark ending is essentially an extended Game Over sequence, in which Vegnagun kills your entire party, and then fires its cannon to obliterate Spira. Cut to the Calm Lands, where the villagers realise what's happening and are utterly powerless to stop its destruction of everything. Cue the Game Over music, and that's your lot.

Why It's Awesome: Rather than just saying "you're dead, want to try again?", the game actually rewards those who fell in battle with a brief ending sequence. Sure, few gamers are simply going to turn the game off there and be satisfied, but it's a smart way to give it a different kind of finality.
