12 Awesome Video Games With One Awful Mechanic

11. Ink Ribbons - Resident Evil

Resident Evil 3 Ink Ribbon

Ink ribbons are a staple of the first three Resident Evil games, a necessity in order to save your progress on any of the typewriters scarcely scattered throughout.

While some might view them as a clever way to restrict the player and heighten the tension, as an adult with adult responsibilities, they merely feel like a lazy way to artificially inflate the game's difficulty, because if you're overpowered by a zombie horde and haven't saved lately, your time spent will be summarily flushed away and you'll need to do everything all over again.

Perhaps we're just spoiled in today's age of quick-saves and plentiful checkpoints, but honestly, playing the earlier RE games without a save anywhere hack is an absolute pain in 2017.
