Holy Hell, they actually pulled it off.

After a torturously lengthy development, Final Fantasy 7 Remake surprised everyone by being one of Square-Enix's most intimate adventures to date.

Keeping the action confined to Midgard for the game's 30 hour run-time allowed players to get throughly acquainted with one of gaming's most charming dystopias, and the relatively small cast allowed each character's personality to shine through (especially the previously superfluous Biggs, Wedge and Jessie).

FF7R made you care about the world it created and the people in it, which made the emotional moments hit that much harder.

It also helped that the combat, while far from perfect (the AI companions were good at keeping themselves alive and little else), was the best real-time system yet seen in a Final Fantasy game. FF7R's fights avoided becoming the muddled messes that plagued Final Fantasy XV, and smartly integrated the series' turn-based mechanics (specifically the ATB gauge) into an ARPG format.

FF7R may not have been a genre-defining masterpiece like the game it was based on, but it was one of the most enjoyable experiences we had in 2020. A flawed diamond, but a diamond nonetheless.
