Take the 4 vs. 1000s formula of Left 4 Dead, add the procedural generation of a roguelike, and sprinkle in the terraforming of MineCraft. What could go wrong?

As it turns out, nothing! Deep Rock Galactic really is as good as the sum of its parts.

Sitting pretty with an "Overwhelmingly Positive" ranking on Steam, Ghost Ship Games' co-op FPS deserves every one of its rave reviews. Far from being a mindless blaster, DRG's systems reward strategic planning.

Do you take advantage of the game's destructible environments to mine your way straight to the goal? Or do you and your team of battle-hardened, slightly drunk dwarves explore your surroundings for the resources needed to level your character, at the risk of alerting the game's horde of bug-like aliens?

Speaking of Aliens, DRG is at its best when it evokes memories of Jame's Cameron's legendary film series. Desperately blasting the oncoming hordes as they begin to overwhelm your hastily-constructed killzone feels like starring in a lovingly-crafted backyard recreation of 1986's Aliens (and we mean that with the greatest possible respect).

It may not have the official branding, but Deep Rock Galactic is secretly the best Aliens game since Isolation. If Sega ever want to make another game featuring the iconic xenomorph, they'd do well to get Ghost Ship Games onside.
