5. God Of War: Ascension

There seems to be a theme going on here. Oh yeah - it's that prequels are generally a bit crapper than the main series and only act as filler before the next magnificent sequel. God of War Ascension is one such example of this. Nowhere near as good as God of War III was, the game retained the series' trademark gory OTT action but seemed somewhat muted compared to the spectacle of the third game. It was a nice little bridge I guess, but ultimately it just felt like it was telling a story that didn't really need to be told. Again, as seems to be the curse with these prequel games, God of War Ascension also tacked on a pointless multiplayer component for absolutely no apparent reason. It was also very unfairly balanced - most of it was easy peasy, but the Trial of Archimedes section was absolutely hair-tearingly hard. The only thing that was ascending at that point was the game disc as it was thrown across the room in a fit of frustration.
