12 Most Epic Character Introductions In Gaming History

12. Commander Shepard (Mass Effect 2)

Easily one of the most shockingly brilliant intro sequences to any sequel is the death of Commander Shepard in Mass Effect 2. The game begins with a thrilling, devastating attack on the SSV Normandy, and ever the hero, Shepard manages to escort Joker to an escape pod, albeit at the expense of his own life. Shepard is then blown out into space, and promptly suffocates as he floats out into the distant orbit of a nearby planet, as the game's title appears amid some rather beautiful piano music. It was unquestionably a "Holy s***!" moment, as fans may have feared that they'd been "Raiden'd" and would be playing as another character for the rest of the game. However, as we learnt moments later, Shepard is in fact resurrected by way of the Lazarus project two years later, and fans everywhere could breathe a sigh of relief. Fair play to BioWare, though: they totally got us (yes, all of us).
