12 Gaming Predictions For 2020 (Now E3 Isn't Happening)

3. At Least One Game Studio Will Unionise

With video game publishers being heavily scrutinised in recent years for their suspect business practises, especially with regard to crunch, it's been speculated that we're extremely close to the first video game developer voting to unionise.

It's a discussion which tends to intensify during E3 week when a global spotlight is shone on the industry, yet E3's cancellation may instead cause some companies, especially smaller indie devs, to feel the economic impact of the show's absence.

After all, the cancellation of the Game Developers Conference mere weeks ago resulted in the establishment of a hardship fund for indie developers who have already shelled out for pricey flights and hotels in San Francisco, and we can probably expect the same to happen for E3.

This will likely only further the discourse about the treatment of game studios throughout 2020, and bolster the belief that, yes, unionisation is absolutely necessary, and lead to a name studio, probably an indie outfit, formally establishing a union.

It'll be a slow process to ensure more fair and reasonable practises across the industry, but this would certainly be an encouraging start.
