12 Greatest Final Fantasy Battle Themes

1. "Battle 1" - Final Fantasy IX's Battle Theme

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7sG3l5ryOk Final Fantasy VII distorted the traditional battle theme into something quite ugly, for my liking. Then you had Final Fantasy VIII come along and took it in a completely different direction with a full orchestral accompaniment which led to a powerful, high octane version of the theme, admittedly good. However, what IX did was hit the sweet spot between generations. It took the original composition and morphed it into the (almost) 21st century with an accompaniment of trumpets and a climax of the loop- around the 1-minute mark- that earlier themes from the series were sorely missing. It is the archetypal Final Fantasy Battle Theme and rightfully so. It checks every box. Energetic, melodic, uplifting and just the right amount of repetitiveness, never before or since has mindlessly slaughtering hundreds upon hundreds of monsters been quite as fun! I've attached the 30-minute extended loop at the top. Just put it on, with headphones if you like and go about your cyberspace day. Social media, forums, even work, you'll soon find it seeps into your mind, making whatever it is you're doing that much more fun... and that's why it's #1. Battle after battle, just like when you're writing word after word as I am now can become insipid and monotonous and this track, whilst keeping your mind in check with it's constant rise and fall, finds a way to remain fresh in your mind- a true achievement for a track which loops every 1 minute, 11 seconds- and, for me, that's what a Final Fantasy Battle Theme is all about.
