When Shinji Mikami left the Resident Evil series it was a major cause for concern - the resulting action-focussed titles being confirmation of the franchise's spiral into mass market-pleasing saturation - but thankfully, those in desperate need of a Resident Evil 4-style thrill-ride finally got their wish when The Evil Within released last year. With a strict focus on ammo-scarcity that means you'll just scrape through any encounter if you're making every bullet count, to boss fights that are a total nostalgia-trip of pattern recognition and an overall progression that gives you some much-needed variety in tackling enemies with a very versatile crossbow, Mikami's return to horror was a resoundingly positive one. Sure the plot goes completely banana-sandwich near the end and the villain looks about as threatening as a random hooded youth after smoking an entire pack of cigarettes, but for the ride this takes you on, the visuals that back it up and the general atmosphere of a survival horror that knows when to pull and land its punches, it's the finest around.
